Signalling new directions in his art practice, Valay Gada’s solo exhibition, titled ‘Cloud Pruning’, features recent drawings, sculpture in metal, ceramics and fibre, and an interactive audio-video installation. Created over the past year, the works in the show reflect the artist’s feelings of anxiety and uncertainty (and by extension the general air of despondence that has marked the period since the Covid pandemic), transformed by time and reflection into hope and resurgence. Nature, climate change and the impact of urbanisation have always been essential to Valay’s practice; and while the title of the show, a term from Japanese topiary art, signals a continuity of thematic concerns, the artist is also here using the phrase literally to signal the ‘clouds’ – gloom and negativity – being ‘pruned’ to let the light – hope and optimism – shine through.
