Ishita Chakraborty

Ishita Chakraborty’s art practice is shaped by her experience of being an immigrant, living far away from her home, mother tongue and native culture. The ensuing feelings of disquiet and nostalgia she projects onto, and contextualises within, the global displacement of people due to war, natural disaster or political repression, the historical traumas of colonialism, and the resultant loss of language and identity. Ishita’s oeuvre spans several mediums – paper, ceramics, installation, poetry, video, and sound. Language as both signifier and repository of repressed cultural memory is a key concern in her work.       

Ishita has an MFA from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, and has been living in Switzerland since 2017 where she  is currently pursuing an MFA program at the Zurich University of the Arts. She was awarded the Gästeatelier Krone residency in 2017, which culminated in an exhibition of the resulting project at the Museum Forum SchlossPlatz, Aarau, Switzerland. Recent exhibitions include: ‘Lyrics of Loss and Longing’ at the Prameya Foundation, New Delhi, India (2020), ‘I speak your language’, Kunstraum ZHdK, Zurich (2019); ‘What Leaf? What Mushrooms?’, Art Container, Zurich (2019). She was invited to participate in the Khoj Foundation PEERS SHARE programme, Delhi (2018); and the residency programme by Piramal Museum of Art in Mumbai, India (2015). She will be a part of the 5th International Biennale de Casablanca in Morocco, due to be held in 2022. In 2020, Ishita was awarded the ZHdK Avina Foundation Grant in Switzerland and a Lakshmi Mittal and Family Visiting Artist Fellowship at Harvard University, USA.
