?IAAC | NYC | “Erasing Borders” | 2004 curated by Sundaram
Tagore?Sundaram Tagore is a New York-based curator and gallerist. A descendant
of the influential poet and Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, he
promotes East-West dialogues through his contributions to numerous exhibitions
as well as his eponymous gallery. Sundaram was previously a director at
Pace Wildenstein in New York. My work was among that of 27 others selected
by Mr. Tagore.??SAVAC | Toronto | “Peace Taxi” | 2004 curated
by Cyrus Irani? This project was inspired in part by the post-Sept. 11
experiences of taxi drivers, many of whom displayed the US flag out of
patriotism as much as fear. The 14 artists chosen for the exhibition were
each given an active taxi cab in which to create a site-specific installation.
Playing within my taxi was a 'remix' of audio I had culled from street
scenes in India, electronic beats and live instrumentation intended to
merge with the local sounds. Passenger windows were covered in transparent
photographs from these same streets, creating a tension of public/private,
local/remote space.
?Kanoria Centre for Art | Ahmedabad, India | “Auracle” | 2003
curated by Nitin Mukul and Deepak Kulkarni? This installation artwork blended
and remixed diverse modes and tools of ritual, ancient and contemporary
mythological symbols, structures and improvised sound. A microcosmic model
of the chaotic, pluralistic state of affairs currently holding the world’s
stage and the ancient yet increasingly relevant use of ritual for securing
one’s own personal space within it, leaping geographical and cultural
boundaries that are often used as dividing mechanisms today. It draws
parallels between and explores overlaps of events and culture across hemispheres
within a local economy. ??D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival | 68
