This Split-Screen Video Work Simultaneously Depicts
The End Of Two Separate Punjabi Weddings Both Filmed
In England. Using Footage From The ‘Doli’,
The Moment At Which The Bride Leaves Her Parental Home
In The Care Of Her Husband, The Work Focuses On The
Re-Contextualisation Of A Culturally Specific Ritual.
The Decadent And Celebratory Aesthetic Is Contradicted
By The Grieving Of The Bride And The Wedding Party,
Creating Confusion About The Nature Of The Event. By
Slowing Down The Footage, Accidental Moments Of Synchronisation
Occur Between The Two Screens, Emphasising The Performative
Element Of The Ritual. In Both Screens, The English
Architecture And Settings Of The Events Are Juxtaposed
Against The Culturally Specificity Of The Ritual. Exploring
Moments Of Contradictory Emotions And Hybrid Culture,
The Work Attempts To Place The Viewer In A Position
Of Uncertainty, Which Is Emphasised Through The Lack
Of Audio.
