Light Life depicts the empty interiors of ‘Dance Bars/Ladies Bars’ in the city of Mumbai. Mathew Thomas shot the photographs on the eve of the nightclubs forced closure by the Maharashtra state government. In July 2005 the Bill to ban the dance bars in Maharashtra was passed unanimously as they felt ‘they corrupt young men and breed crime and prostitution in India’s financial and entertainment heart’. Light Life questions this decision as many ex-dancers were obliged to seek the very employment the censure sought to discourage.
