Not of Light and Sound Alone

In recent times light and sound have become popular mediums for several new artists. Parallel sculptures, juxtaposition of diverse situations, examination of contemporary socio-political situations, an acerbic sense of humour, criticism combine to form a body of work that mess with your senses.

Five artists who have been constantly refitting existing genres and themes to create visual (sonic and optical) languages never seen before in India. When Amar Kanwar keeps revisiting socio-political issues to generate a dialogue through his videos, Anup Mathew Thomas reads than what is apparent in characters he shoots and portraits.

Kabir Mohanty’s videos are about mundane happenings which one otherwise tend to ignore but gain gravity if presented in a different context.

Sudrshan Shetty brings to the fore his highly imaginative museum project called ‘Six Drops’ in which he uses his unique method of abstraction in his computer-generated inkjet prints to investigate illusions that transform the viewer’s perception of actual space in a synthesis of the real and the virtual.

Chittrovanu Mazumdar explores the spiritual quest of mankind through his works.

Video art is still at a nascent stage in India with awareness being minimal as information about its relevance is not very forthcoming. This show aims to create an impact in this realm by presenting the works of five of the most important contemporary artists who have been pushing the envelope and are comparable with any contemporary working
in this medium.
