SOMETHING TERRIBLE HAS HAPPENED, 2009, is a video
of a site-specific installation (titled FIRST ATTEMPT
TO UNDERSTAND BREATHING SPACE, 2006) where the viewer
witnesses an anonymous business man mechanically inserting
an air vent into a fertile landscape. While observing
the collision between corporate and natural environments,
one begins to question the purpose of this action,
which appears endless and without resolve. In the
distance, a soundtrack interacts with each brutal
blow of the axe and the landscape becomes scarred
with more air vents. While I explore the notion of
‘cause and effect’, I also examine the
physical and emotional mechanisms involved in the
endless manufacturing and consuming of household appliances.
Metaphorically, the air vents represent the essential
element of air which shapes our existence. The video
fades to black and what remains is the irony of this
exploitation; where air has been manipulated for the
benefit of mankind and in turn has caused its demise
by disturbing the environment through global warming.
While contemplating this seemingly insignificant act
of consuming the landscape, the viewer is left alone
to calculate the cost for future generations.
