The New Indian Porn is a video that
Chintan Upadhyay did as a part of his ‘The New
Indian’ show at Natalie Seroussie Gallery, Paris
in 2008. This video is made of a series of MMS clippings
and other pornographic visuals largely circulated amongst
the Indian public. Chintan debates the issue of visual
culture as a hybrid and pirated culture. In the virtual
realm of communication, the ‘author-less’
images are circulated in order to mark the aspiration
levels of a surging population. In this work, the aesthetical
and ethical boundaries are collapsed as the artist assumes
the role of a DJ who pirates, mixes and reinvent the
already available visuals. He asserts that piracy of
visuals and ideas has become a culture in itself that
considerably influence the people all over the world,
whether they want it in that way or not.
